Get Your Kitsap Home Ready for Winter

A little prep beats a cold-weather emergency

Kitsap winters rarely hit extreme cold, but the damp, sustained chill is hard on home systems — and the wettest, darkest weeks are exactly when you don't want a breakdown. Here's the checklist we run through with our members every fall.

Heating

• Schedule a furnace, boiler, or heat pump tune-up before the first real cold
• Replace or clean filters
• Test the thermostat and program a comfortable winter schedule

Plumbing

• Insulate exposed and crawl-space pipes against freezing
• Disconnect and drain outdoor hose bibs
• Flush the water heater so it's ready for heavy winter use

Electrical

• Test GFCI outlets and check that outdoor circuits are weather-sealed
• Have any flickering lights or warm outlets inspected before you lean on space heaters
